Crown Shy Continuum
The Concept
CROWN SHY CONTINUUM stems from an aspiration to explore architecture and art as figuratively symmetric, where the former is not crushed or overwhelmed by the latter. Curated by the contemporary artist Max Frisinger (b. 1980), who is taking over OUTPOST – Casa das Arribas with this collective art show, CROWNSHY AT OUTPOST celebrates space, boundaries, or lack thereof, and a distractive harmony of sorts — one must observe the artwork as being immersed within all the areas of this distinctive hotel. A pre-formed canvas where Frisinger is bound to integrate the work of 30 Portuguese and international artists into seven holiday apartments and 10,000 sqm of sumptuous garden.
CROWN SHY CONTINUUM’s own designation holds a two-fold meaning. On the one hand, the natural phenomenon of crown shyness, observed by Frisinger in Penedo, where he is currently living, shows us a collection of trees growing next to each other — without touching, leaving space between their crowns. They communicate under the soil, but they give each other room to breathe. Frisinger looked at this singularity as something connected to what he intends to do at OUTPOST. On the other hand, being shy of a crown, the constant battle of an artist confronting the idea of being a marked genius yet a flawed human being, thus constantly accepting and neglecting a crown or its perceivable connotation.
